Hello! I am Nathan Zekarias, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, where I study Computer Science & Engineering.
I approach research problems with a unique lens, shaped by my BS in Biological Sciences. I enjoy the pursuit of understanding the determinants of human and environmental health. I have found deep learning
techniques to be most apt in applying my knowledge in Computer Science and Biology in the attempt of improving the health of our planet.
I am currently conducting research in the Realize Lab, where I am advised by Professor
Elizabeth Bondi-Kelly.
Currently, I am focusing on understanding how to use a geospatial deep learning framework to predict levels of forever
chemicals (PFAS) in surface water. I am also working on establishing a causal relationship between PFAS exposure in the environment and maternal and fetal health outcomes using public
Michigan birth data.
